Method Statement

A method statement is a document describing, step by step, how a specific work task will be carried out safely and in the correct sequence.

A method statement (sometimes called a safe work method statement) sets out the agreed way of carrying out a particular task, breaking it into a logical sequence of steps and identifying the controls, equipment, and people needed at each stage. It complements the risk assessment, which identifies the hazards, by explaining how those hazards will be managed in practice.

Method statements are widely used in construction and are often required by the principal contractor before higher-risk activities such as excavation, lifting operations, or work at height can begin. The HSE encourages them for non-routine or complex work, though they are not a legal requirement for every task.

To be effective, a method statement should be specific to the site and task, written in plain language, and briefed to the operatives who will follow it rather than filed away unread.
