Toolbox Talk
A toolbox talk is a short, informal safety briefing delivered to a work team on site to reinforce awareness of a specific hazard or safe practice.
A toolbox talk is a brief, focused safety discussion, usually lasting only a few minutes, delivered to operatives before or during work. It typically covers a single topic such as manual handling, working at height, or a hazard specific to the day's tasks, and is a practical way of keeping health and safety visible on site.
While toolbox talks are not a specific legal requirement in their own right, they help employers meet their duty under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 to provide information, instruction, and training. The HSE recognises them as a useful method of communicating risks to the workforce.
Recording attendance at toolbox talks, with the topic and date, provides evidence that safety information has been communicated, which is valuable both for internal audits and if an incident is later investigated.
