CSCS Card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme)

A CSCS card is a UK certification card proving that a construction worker holds the training and qualifications appropriate to their role on site.

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) issues cards that confirm a worker has the training and qualifications needed for the job they do on a construction site. Different card types and colours correspond to different roles and levels of qualification, from labourer through to manager and professional grades.

CSCS cards are not a legal requirement, but most principal contractors and clients require them as a condition of access to site, so in practice they act as a gateway to construction work. Applicants usually need a relevant qualification and to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

Because cards have expiry dates and must be renewed, tracking the validity of operatives' CSCS cards is an important part of workforce compliance, particularly where an out-of-date card could stop someone from working.
