Training Matrix

A training matrix is a table mapping workers against required training and qualifications to show who is trained, competent, and due for renewal.

A training matrix is a management tool, usually laid out as a grid, that maps individual workers against the training courses, qualifications, and certifications relevant to their roles. At a glance it shows who holds which qualifications, where there are gaps, and which certificates are approaching expiry.

While a training matrix is not itself a legal requirement, it helps employers meet their duty to ensure workers are competent and adequately trained under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. It also supports evidence of competence required under CDM 2015 and schemes such as CSCS.

Kept up to date, a training matrix makes it far easier to plan refresher training, avoid deploying under-qualified workers, and demonstrate competence to clients and auditors.
