Geofencing uses GPS or location data to define a virtual boundary around a site, triggering actions such as check-in when a device enters or leaves.
Geofencing is a technology that draws a virtual boundary around a physical location using GPS, mobile, or other location data. When a device crosses that boundary, the system can trigger an action, such as prompting a worker to check in or out, or recording their arrival on site.
In workforce and site management, geofencing is used to confirm that operatives are physically present at the correct location when they log attendance, which improves the accuracy of time records and site presence data. It can also support access control and lone-worker safety.
Where location data relates to identifiable individuals, its use is subject to UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), so employers should be transparent about how tracking is used and limit it to legitimate purposes.
